Title: The next decade of scientific computing

Abstract: The Scientific Python ecosystem is a loose federation of libraries written by volunteers for use by themselves and the community. It is now the de facto platform for scientific research and data science. In this talk I discuss how a small, unfunded, community effort managed to succeed against the odds; the challenges it faces; what can be done (by us, by you!) to make it better; and what lies on the road ahead.

Biography: Stéfan van der Walt is a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley,
the founder of scikit-image, and co-author of "Elegant SciPy: The Art of Scientific Python".
He has been developing scientific open-source software for more than fifteen years, focusing primarily on tools in the Python language. Previously, he was a lecturer in Applied Mathematics at Stellenbosch University. He is also affiliated with the School of Data Science at the University of Stellenbosch.
